Why we ride motor-bikes in South Africa.
Firstly the climate offers us many days of sunshine per year in which to enjoy the great outdoors! Climatically the country is very diverse, whereby KZN ( Kwa Zulu Natal) enjoys hot humid summers and mild winters. The months of April, May and June are especially suitable for outdoor activities in KZN, with the summer humidity giving way to mild weather with temperatures in the mid-twenties (Celsius) and very little in the way of thunderstorms.
Inland temperatures start dropping in April and May, meaning that early morning rides will start off below 10 degrees C. Autumn colours in the KZN midlands will enthral the nature lovers in us. Oaks, planes, liquid ambers and poplar trees all start shedding their leaves, ushering in a plethora of hues. Further inland the Drakensberg escarpment rises up to the heavens and runs hundreds of kilometres from NW KZN all the way up to Mphumulanga, to the west of the famed Kruger Park.
Up on the highveld we are greeted with much flatter terrain, with maize fields and wheat forming a golden back-drop as far as the eye can see. By heading further west into the Karoo regions we'll find the landscape and climate that inspired the famous author Olive Schreiner. Here the winter climate is severe over night with frost and the occasional snow-fall, with the passing of cold frontal weather. In the summer months it'll be advisable to head out early in the Karoo, before the relentless midday sun takes its toll. A typical Durban to Cape Town trip could be accomplished in three to four days, with a maximum of three hundred to four hundred kms per day travelled.
The Western Cape with Cape Town as its epicentre is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. However its climate is very different to that of the rest of South Africa. The Cape experiences dry warm summers, but by April to May the cold fronts bring in cooler weather.
The roads in South Africa are generally well maintained, but one must be aware of pot-holes on the less popular routes. Traffic density can be severe in the major cities during rush hour, but out on the highways a biker can experience the freedom of our wide-open spaces.
The people are unique in this beautiful country of ours. Upon landing at OR. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg one will immediately feel the warmth and openness of our people. About thirteen different languages are spoken in South Africa, but English will get you from A to B! The love of the great outdoors is what inspires most of us here at the southern tip of Africa. Cycling, running, canoeing, surfing and motor-biking are all immensely popular. In fact in KZN we host a few very famous outdoor events in the form of the Comrades Marathon and Duzi Canoe marathon. The Comrades as it is known is about 88kms long and draws runners from all over the world. Well over 20000 runners take part in this epic race linking the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
The Duzi Canoe marathon also links Pietermaritzburg and Durban, via the Mngeni River and takes 3 days to complete! Finally the Amashova Cycle race takes thousands of cyclists from Pietermaritzburg to Durban as well.
It is this diversity of cultures that makes this country so fascinating. If help is required a man herding his goats or a farmer on his tractor should all be happy to offer advice on where to stay and what to eat!
We invite you to come and experience what our beautiful country has to offer.
